ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA

WHAT IS THANKSGIVING?

Thanksgiving is a US festivity on the fourth Thursday in November. For many Americans it is the most important holiday apart from Christmas. Schools and offices close for Thanksgiving and many people make the whole weekend a vacation.

THE STORY OF THANKSGIVING

In 1620 the first Europeans from Britain arrived in North America aboard The Mayflower, a ship. They were The Pilgrims. It was winter and they had nothing to eat. Most of them died.  In springtime, Native Americans showed them what foods were safe to eat so that they could save food for the next winter. They had a big celebration to thank God for the food and his friends the Native Americans.

HOW DO THEY CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING NOWADAYS?

Today, people still celebrate this day with a traditional dinner : turkey, sweet potatoes (also called yams)  and cranberries. On Thanksgiving there are special TV programmes and sports events.

Watch the video: the story of Thanksgiving. After that, post a comment:What are YOU thankful for?
